Why should I take a responsible beverage server training course?

Selling and serving alcohol in the United States is nothing to take lightly. And doing it responsibly in Wisconsin requires a combination of focused effort and training on your part. Applicants who want an operator or bartender license are required to complete a responsible beverage server training course by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR). However, if you meet the following criteria, you could be an exception:

  • You are renewing a Wisconsin retail or operator's license
  • You were an agent of a business that had a Wisconsin retail license within the last 2 years
  • You had a Wisconsin retail or operator's license in the last 2 years, or
  • You completed a server training course approved by the state of Wisconsin in the last 2 years
Who should take this course? Am I eligible?
This course is designed for employees who bartend or operate establishments that sell and serve alcohol in the state of Wisconsin. Remember, anyone can take the course, but you must be at least 18 years old to serve, and 21 years old to sell alcohol.
Are there differences between a bartender's license and an operator's license?

The differences may seem small but they’re important to remember. Take note of the following qualifications for obtaining a bartenders license:

  • Allowed to drink legally in the United States (21)
  • Lived continuously in Wisconsin for at least 90 days
  • Have a seller's permit from Wisconsin's Department of Revenue

  • To obtain an operator’s license you have to meet the following criteria:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Meet specific requirements regarding your criminal record, and
  • Have completed the responsible beverage server course (this can be waived if you are renewing your application or have held a Wisconsin beverage license in the last 2 years)

What happens if I fail the final exam? How many chances do I get to pass?
Don't worry if you fail the test the first time. You get 2 attempts for a passing score before you're required to retake the course, at no additional charge.
How long does it take to get my certificate once I pass?
Once you pass the test, a certificate is immediately available to download and print from the website. And, if you ever misplace your certificate, simply log in to your account, go to the end of the course and reprint it.
How long will my certification last?
Depending on your municipality in the state of Wisconsin, your responsible beverage server certificate is valid for 2 years.
