The Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training (BASSET) program is administered by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC). The program is an educational and training tool to sellers/servers of alcoholic beverages to serve responsibly and stay within the law. BASSET training is not mandatory in the State of Illinois, however, some municipalities in the State of Illinois do require BASSET certification. Check your local laws to see if you must attend BASSET training in order to be employed at a liquor establishment. The ILCC encourages voluntary participation in seller/server training courses.
Alcohol sales can be on-premise (consumed on site) or off-premise (consumed off site). Trained sellers, servers, and managers are better able to identify and prevent sales of alcoholic beverages to minors, intoxicated persons, and non-members of a private club. This course covers physical properties of alcohol, intervention and prevention techniques, how to properly check identification cards and drivers licenses, and how to spot potential underage users. BASSET training can also reduce an establishments' liquor liability insurance.
